Healthy Eating

It seems many of us have gotten far away from healthy eating, with all of our pre-packaged, pop it in the microwave, save a minute in the kitchen attitude about food.   And many people don't really know what is healthy anymore.    So let's start with the basics and then build from there.    Start with fresh, organic if possible,  fruits and veggies, a few organic grains, free range eggs and meats which have much more of the good fats omega 3's and great protein, and nuts and seeds.   Make protein a much smaller part of your diet with Vegetables and fruits being the largest percentage.   And forget the food pyramid!   Your body doesn't need nor will it thrive on all those grains.

In the thirty five years I'm been consulting people about their nutrition and health, I've seen nearly every health fad out there and done many of them myself.   I think if you look to what God provided us, you will really be on the best track for health and if you want more in depth knowledge about food as medicine, there is "Healing With Whole Fooods"  by Paul Pitchard, an amazing book that reveals each food's attributes from Chinese Medicines principles of taste, temperature, organ systems affected, and much more.    Recognize that agriculture has really only been around for ten thousand years or so and it is not what we evolved on, so leave most of the grains alone, especially the genetically modified ones:  no wheat or corn!   Look to the Paleo 'diet'...don't you just hate the word diet?   Or I prefer to think of it as "The Maker's Diet".    God had a plan and most of us aren't following it.

Patients are always asking me what do I eat.   Right now I'm eating a sweet potato - garnet, that was baked in the oven.   I put coconut oil on it though have been known to use butter - always raw and organic and I prefer lightly salted!   With a cup of organic black cardamon tea, loaded with lemon juice and a bit of raw honey and a teaspoon of Maca powder!    Often I'll soak Chia seeds in warm water till they're sorta slippery, and throw those in a blender with 1/2 a lemon with the peel on.... make sure it's an organic lemon!   I'll toss in whatever fruits I have on hand or I may go with a veggie smoothie, either way, just make it with things you enjoy.   The chia seeds are a great source of protein and one of the best sources of healthy fats. and you only need a tsp of them to give you energy for hours.   Be sure to soak those chia seeds first as they are water lovers and will absorb fluids from your intestines..... and you don't want to constipate yourself!.   Do you remember studying about the Mayan messengers who would run all day and all night delivering messages around the 'kingdom'.    Well, they died skinny and constipated cause they had pockets full of chia seeds that they ate as they ran.    But at least they had energy...lol   And yes, I do eat burgers, though from grass fed beef, and I love a good BBQ, what southern girl doesn't?

The Importance of Wearing a Mask

Last week I worked on a little boy and his mother, both of whom were pretty much in the throws of an upper respiratory infection, definitely still in contagion mode, as they had low grade fevers, coughs, and sniffles.    I didn't know when I walked in that they were sick, so I wasn't wearing a mask to protect me from their germs, and, dang it, two days later I had that nasty cold.    Well, I cancelled patients for two days and life went on.   

I did have to go to the store for some groceries, and as I was still in the sneezing and coughing phase with a low grade fever, I put a mask on so I wouldn't share this most unwelcome germ.    As I was putting my groceries in my car a woman got out of the car parked in front of mine, also wearing a mask.    And so I asked her if she was sick, to which she replied that SHE HAD CANCER AND HAD JUST GOTTEN OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AFTER EXPOSURE TO SOMEONE WITH A COLD HAD NEARLY KILLED HER!!!!   

Good people, when you are sick, life often has to go on, but please, please, PLEASE WEAR A MASK.... you never know when you are going to be in the presense of someone with a lowered immune or even hyper-immune system, and your basic common cold germ (or worse germ) can threaten these people's very lives.   I promise you people will look at you as if you're a Martian or carrying the plague, but it is worth it  when you know that you can literally save someone's life by this simple act.  Oh, and for those of you who don't know, I do have a compounding pharmacy of 5:1 concentrated herbal powders from which I can make your individualized herbal latte to treat pretty much any thing going on with you.    And no, it doesn't taste bad at all, in fact, it tastes like a latte!   Talk with me about getting an herbal formula to treat yourself if you're tired of chasing symptoms around or just masking symptoms.
